SLolar Central
Originally uploaded by kjarrett.
We are pleased to announce “SLolar Central” (SLolar = Second Life Scholar), a facility providing FREE, temporary “office space” (and other resources) for K-20 educators and school administrators exploring Second Life.
My partner in this endeavor is Nancy Sharoff (SL: Laelia Laval). We met at the Google Teacher Academy in New York City. We are so excited about SL’s potential that we decided to create our own community for fellow educators. So, we leased three floors in a gorgeous tower on EduIsland II, located at:

SLolar Central is a gathering place for educators committed to exploring the possibilities of SL, a place where avatars can experiment with modes of communication, building, movement, etc. to enhance their SL experience and find ways to use it in the classroom and as a means of professional development. Our vision is to create a community of learners devoted to exploring SL and sharing the experience. To find out more, please visit SLolar Central’s Google Groups page at:

We are very excited about the potential for this community and hope that many of you will join us as we explore the infinite possibilities of SL. Space is limited, so act fast. Any questions? Let us know!

SLolar Central is a wonderful idea. I hope this means you will be placing less emphasis on the “rock stars” of EduIsland II and paying some attention to the efforts of the lesser known educators in the area.
I understand the excitement that surrounds fame. However, many of the famous residents you frequently mention aren’t contributing much of anything to life on EduIsland II. In contrast, there are several “unknowns” who are actively building, scripting, and implementing educational
ideas. These projects are never mentioned here because the people behind them aren’t rock stars. They are just ordinary people who see the value in SL and are trying to find ways to use this world in education. Perhaps when the excitement of the rock stars wears off, you will find time to walk around the neighborhood and see how much is being accomplished by the unknowns.
That said, I think SLolar Central is a good start.
