Doonesbury on SL (and those that don’t get it)

Special thanks to my ISTE Docent colleague Claird Loon (RL: Caren Levine) for spotting this great Doonesbury strip in today’s (Sunday, September 9th) paper. I love how it plays off Rick’s ignorance of the virtual world Jeff is now engrossed in, and how Jeff casually pwns (that’s not a typo) dear old Dad. SWEET! -kj-

    Excellent dude! But how do YOU pronounce it?

    Here’s a switch – the irony is that I read the cartoon on Saturday in the Sunday print edition of my local newspaper, parts of which are delivered on Saturday, but couldn’t access the cartoon online until it was released on Sunday (did you follow that?) :)

    Lisa, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn says there is no accepted pronunciation since it’s mostly used in text form but this is offered:

    * [pu:n] (as in “harpoon”; W has this sound in cwm and crwth)
    * [pəʔˈoʊn] (puh-own)
    * [piˈoʊn] (pee-own)
    * [pʌn] (pun)
    * [pwin] (pween)
    * [pɔːn] (pawn)
    * [paʊn] (to rhyme with gown)
    * [pwəʔˈn̩] (pwuh-nn)
    * [pwoʊn] (pwone)
    * [pwɪn] (pwin, rhyming with win)
    * [pəwən] (puh-wun)
    * [piː dʌbəlju ɛn], pronouncing each letter separately
