Fw: Google’s Second Life Competitor?

The Grid Live offers this well-researched post detailing what appears to be preparations by Google to enter the virtual world space. In short: a virtual world pilot project getting underway at Arizona State University seems to have a hint of Googly goodness (and the university has a long-standing and documented working relationship with Mother Google). Details are being pieced together from multiple sources and I’ve not see anything more definitive yet, but it’s clear SOMETHING in the virtual world space is coming from the Google gang in November, guess us peons are just going to have to wait and see. I agree with this blog’s author that it’s unlikely Google will be directly competing with Linden Lab right away. Few companies have the resources Google does, but can you imagine the infrastructure and server capacity needed to support a Second Life-style application? It’s clearly something Google is capable of, though, and I now have a better understanding why Google execs were so cagey when I asked them about Second Life back in February at the Google Teacher Academy in NYC. Stay tuned! -kj-
